Episode 102: Writing as Parents

This week, Fable and the Verbivore discuss writing while balancing other roles and responsibilities - specifically for us our roles as parents.

Both Bethany and Laura wear many different hats on a daily basis, so we dig into strengthening our ability to pivot when we need to and managing our internal messages. Reminding ourselves when we have to set our writing down to fulfill some of our other responsibilities, that the words will still be there waiting for us.

We also talk about sometimes letting our writing flow into the cracks or small spaces of time that we have in a day. Using the breaks between weightlifting reps or in the moments of waiting while making dinner to get some words in or ideas down. Realizing that if we can’t set aside a large block of time, maybe we can find small chunks in unexpected places.

In this episode, we talk about the challenges of doing the work while meeting constantly changing needs. But also what kids can teach us - the importance of play, following curiosity and acting on your instincts, and exploring all the possibilities with an unfettered imagination. We also discuss the importance of valuing the work for how you develop when you’re creating, in addition to the thing you create and put out into the world.

We hope you enjoy this episode. Keep reading, writing, and putting your voice out there!

Into the woods,

Fable & The Verbivore

Notes:

The Verbivore references the freewriting exercise that she’s currently engaging in on a regular basis. How it looks to her, is that she chooses a topic and writes until the page in her journal is full. Here is a little more information on freewriting:

The Verbivore mentioned artists showing comparisons between their work as a young child and as they grew older. Here is a link to some of those comparisons:

The Verbivore referenced that Vanity Fair has YouTube segments of actors discussing their careers. She was specifically referencing having watched Tom Hiddleston, Jude Law, Natalie Portman, and Scarlet Johansson - but there are many others. Here is a link to that YouTube playlist:
