Today, Fable and the Verbivore are delighted to share our conversation with author and memoirist Mae Wagner.
Mae is an author, speaker, and Healing Coach/Mentor, specializing in trauma and grief navigation by partnering alongside women as they process hard things. She hosts the The Rainy Day Collective Podcast which is available to listen at many places including Spotify , Apple , and Google Podcast . She is also the facilitator of the Carpe Diem Writers Group. Her personal memoir titled Girls, Assassins & Other Bad Ideas was published on July 29th of this year and is available everywhere books are sold.
In this episode, Mae talks about writing honestly about sometimes painful or traumatic experiences, the importance of the theraputic healing she’s gone through, and her early desire to write as a way to help people.
Troughout of conversation, she makes so many wise points. Such as:
Our stories reshape and define us. We shouldn’t just release them as if they didn’t happen, because they’re ours. They can be tools to cultivate empathy and community.
Life is so gray. We’re taught that it’s black and white, but it’s not. Embrace the complexities. Truths like, “your most abusive parent can also be your most loving.”
Give yourself the invitation to create the type of community that you need to thrive and don’t get overly attached to the point that you miss out on living life together with each other. Give yourselves the space to show up with all your facets. Create a soft place to fall.
Vulnerably put yourselves out there and work to create a community. We are bred to compete, but it’s powerful to learn that “Her win is my win. Their win is my win.” Learn to love celebrating other people’s successes.
She ends this conversation with two simple, yet great pieces of advice. Don’t do it alone, find your people. We often know what feels right. Listen to yourself, and trust your intuition.
We hope you enjoy this episode. It was a conversation filled with so many honest takeaways on the process of facing and finding healing from trauma, truth telling, the power of storytelling, and the joys of creating in community!
Keep reading, writing, and putting your voice out there!
Into the woods,
Fable & The Verbivore
