Episode 215: Things We're Learning About Our Writing

This week on Fable and the Verbivore, we’re talking about some of the lessons our writing has been teaching us this year.
In this episode, we talk about the projects we’ve been working on this year — the Verbivore has recently finished drafting her first book in over a year and Fable (under a pen name) has recently completed a 8-novella series of stories — and digging into what we feel those writing experiences have taught us.
Things like:
The value of iteration and giving an idea space to grow and develop
Giving things time to become and for your subconscious to make sense of things and dig deeper with them
Figuring out your way or path into a story
Letting things go that you may love, but no longer fit
Practicing deep listening with your characters
Digging in with the scenes and elements that scare you
Trying new things to help get the type of feedback you want at a specific time
Figuring your process for sharing work and editing
Paying close attention to what works for you and what doesn’t and making changes to suit that knowledge
Identifying writing crutches and looking at your preferred sentence structures to help expand your writing
Towards the end of our conversation, we talk about a co-writing project that Fable is working on and how that process can help both key into your strengths and to make a work even better by tapping into both of your skills, intent, and creativity as well as allow each other to give feedback throughout the process and bounce ideas off each other as sounding boards in real time for a project.
